Sarah Gee Runs for England (26.09.10) - article written by Stan Eldon
A great triumph for Sarah Gee of Reading Roadrunners running her first international race at the age of 46 years. She led the English team of three home in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon run at 7:30am on Sunday morning. In a top quality field including many of the best world top female runners she finished 10th female in 2:38.31, just outside her PB set at Edinburgh earlier this year. She ran a very sensible even paced race and was never outside the top 12 and moved through to 11 th and then 10th in the latter stages. Her first 10k was run in 37:48, and she reached halfway in 79:30, 30k in 1:53.03 and 40k in 2:30.22 (an average of 37.36 each 10k),  very sensible even running.  The race was won in a new record for the event of 2:22.43 by Sharon Cherop (Kenya) and all the runners ahead of her were well known established international marathon runners, 2 Kenyans, 4 Ethiopians, 2 Russians and a Japanese.
I followed her race on the very good live website as the race was run and it was great to see the way she tackled the event. A first international can be a daunting experience but she took it in her stride and again ran faster than any of the British girls in the recent European Championships Marathon. Although missing out on one of the top 8 place prizes she did very easily win the Masters prize.
The England team of mixed gender and based on finishing positions won bronze medals with Sarah the leading runner on position male or female. Canada were the team winners from Japan and England.
Sarah told me on her return “I’m well and truly happy with my performance although not a PB, but you can always have PBs. The first time I have run internationally for England and there were lots of changes to cope with. Long flight, time change of 5 hours, sharing a room and it was all new to me….I also liked getting the Masters title and it is nice to have my name on a Canadian trophy (it stays in Canada)

An Evening with Rosie Swale-Pope MBE  + PRESENTATION OF LONDON MARATHON TEAM MEDALS – Wednesday 14 July 2010, 8pm at Palmer Park. South Downs Marathon Relay The “A” team came in 3rd place out of 100 teams and 12 minutes behind the winning team.
